Research scientist (m/f/d)

(Geospatial analysis of land and agricultural systems)

in an initially fixed-term employment for a period of two years with regular working hours. The position is suitable for part-time employment. The salary is determined based on prior experience and on the fulfilment of requirements according to the German public sector pay scale up to E13 TV-L.

The Centre for Climate Resilience at the 威尼斯赌博游戏_威尼斯赌博app-【官网】 of Augsburg was founded at the end of 2020. The research centre is dedicated to research and science communication in the field of climate resilience with an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to develop scientific foundations and holistic and implementable strategies at regional, national and international level that demonstrate adaptations to the unavoidable consequences of climate change.

Your tasks:

  • Geospatial and change analysis of land and agricultural systems as part of a OneHealth research project focusing on the role of agricultural and land use change in zoonotic diseases in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia.
  • Develop the area of geospatial analysis and Earth observation for agricultural systems at the Centre for Climate Resilience.
  • Produce high quality scientific and/or technical papers suitable for publication in reputable journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.
  • Coordinate a work package within the ZOOMAL project, and other projects or individual project components as required and prepare technical project reports as required.
  • Coaching and mentoring of technical staff, students, and early career scientists.
  • Planning and implementation of courses amounting to 3 semester hours per week (3 x 45 minutes teaching during the semester).
  • Support the academic self-administration tasks of the chair and engage in different university bodies as needed.

The ZOOMAL project aims to strengthen surveillance of zoonotic malaria in Indonesia, including evaluating the disease burden, agricultural practices, and mosquito vectors associated with transmission, in order to inform public health control efforts and sustainable agricultural development. The project is in its second funding phase, after an initial phase of three years. The research will include geospatial analyses, land use change and complexity analyses and combining geospatial with health and agricultural survey data. Among the collaborating research institutes are the Universitas Sumatera Utara, the 威尼斯赌博游戏_威尼斯赌博app-【官网】 of Melbourne, the Universitas Andalas and the Menzies School of Health Research who also coordinates the project.

Employment requirements:

  • Education/Qualifications: A PhD or completion of a PhD program in the next 6 months and in a relevant field, such as geography, environmental science, remote sensing, environmental engineering, bioscience engineering with a focus on agricultural/environmental science or a related field.
  • Communication: Very good written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to publish research findings, prepare reports and present the results of scientific investigations at national and international conferences and stakeholder meetings.
  • Publications: A solid list of publications record in high-quality journals.
  • Behaviour: Professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.

Essential are:

  • Extensive knowledge of land systems or agricultural/food systems both in industrialized countries and in countries of the Global South such as Indonesia.
  • Solid mapping and modelling skills for components of land and agricultural systems at large scales (regional, national, global) and spatial scales of other datasets for large-scale quantitative assessments of land use change, agricultural production, and sustainability, for example agricultural field boundary detection, crop type mapping, cropland mapping, land use change detection.
  • A demonstration of scientific innovation and creativity and the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
  • Programming knowledge, for example with R or Python, solid GIS or other software skills for spatial analysis.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team, also with external researchers overseas and to conduct independent individual research to contribute to common research objectives of the working group and project teams.

Desirable is:

  • Ability to travel to Indonesia for work meetings and/or field work.
  • Interest in advancing remote sensing and Earth observation techniques for small-scale, complex agricultural systems of the Tropics and Subtropics.
