The importance of airborne transmission of virus-laden aerosols, a long-underappreciated transmission mode, has been illuminated during the pandemic of COVID-19. A detailed assessment of respiratory viruses shows that, besides SARS-CoV-2, most common respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, influenza, measles, and the rhinoviruses can all spread via airborne transmission. In this talk, I will provide a brief overview about airborne transmission of virus-laden aerosols and effective precautionary measures to reduce its risk. Besides virus-laden aerosols, many anthropogenic aerosols caused by man-made air pollution are also pathogenic. I will also share our recent efforts in studying the pathogenic mechanism of anthropogenic aerosols from the cellular experiments and animal models. Additionally, I will talk about our latest progress on the monoterpene-derived secondary organic aerosols using VUV photoelectron spectroscopy and vibrational spectroscopy, as well as some ongoing research at the Aerosol Science Research Center, NSYSU in Taiwan.
