Project Overview - Literary Archipelagos and Transoceanic Currents in 21st Century Caribbean and Pacific Literatures

Archipelagic thinking has its beginnings in the late 20th century, based on poets and scholars such as ?douard Glissant and Kamau Brathwaite. The notion of the archipelagic has continued to form and transform diverse discourses across several fields, from political studies to the humanities and island studies. Many scholars have continued to elaborate on and contribute to the utilization as well as the usage of archipelagic thinking, such as Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey and Brian Russel Roberts. This project continues to theorize archipelagic thinking and its notions, taking a closer look at not only the metaphorical use of the archipelago but moreover, at how literatures enact the archipelago. By engaging with selected 21st-century literature, both novels and notably anthologies, from the Caribbean and Pacific archipelagoes, this project seeks to further contemplate archipelagic notions and structures, offering new insights on the generative structure and the tensions between separation and connection across transoceanic space.
