The book The Toxic Ship wins two research awards

The Harold & Margaret Sprout Award and the Hagley Prize have been awarded to Prof Simone Müller

The book The Toxic Ship – The Voyage of the Khian Sea and the Global Waste Trade by Simone Müller, Professor of Global Environmental History and Environmental Humanities at the 威尼斯赌博游戏_威尼斯赌博app-【官网】 of Augsburg, has been awarded two international academic prizes. These are the Harold & Margaret Sprout Award of the International Studies Association (ISA) in the category environmental studies and the Hagley Prize for the best book in the field of economic history awarded by the Business History Conference (BHC) and the Hagley Museum and Library.

In The Toxic Ship, Müller sheds light on the story of the ship Khian Sea, which spent the 80s travelling around the globe carrying a cargo of toxic waste. The book analyses the economic, political, and ecological dimensions of the global trade in waste and their long-term consequences.

The two awards honour Müller’s research on globalisation processes, the relationship between ecology and economy, and the Anthroprocene. The monograph sheds light on how economic interests, environmental politics, and international trading structures combine to create and support a global system of inequality in waste disposal.

Landmark achievement in environmental and economic history

“For me, these awards represent great recognition of my research into the history of the international trade in hazardous waste,” says Müller. “The book shows how environmental and economic history overlap and the negative, long-term consequences that flow from the international trade in waste in a world with unequal environmental and health standards.”

Award ceremonies in Chicago and Atlanta

The Harold & Margaret Sprout Award ceremony took place on the 4th of March 2025 during the ISA’s annual conference in Chicago. The prize honours outstanding academic work at the interface of environmental questions and international studies.

Müller was awarded the Hagley Prize by the Business History Conference and the Hagley Museum and Library on the 16th March 2025. The prize is awarded annually for the best book in the field of economic history and honours work that opens up new perspectives on economic developments. Müller took part in both events online.

Müller holds a DFG Heisenberg professorship at the 威尼斯赌博游戏_威尼斯赌博app-【官网】 of Augsburg. The German Research Foundation acknowledges outstanding academic achievements through these professorships.
