Thematic focus

As human geographers with a focus on urban geography, we work at the interface between the subject areas of “urbanization” and “nature cultures”. We focus on questions of urban climate adaptation as well as on the analysis of urban living environments and the resulting urban-rural relationships. We are currently working on urban infrastructure measures and the planning and administrative processes behind them (Purwins & Keck 2025) and on the role of serious games in participatory urban development (Kaiser & Keck in progress). In addition, we are researching current dynamics of urban food environments (Müller-Hansen et al. 2025) and agricultural practices in the rural periphery (Ainembabzi & Keck in progress). In the context of international debates, we position ourselves in the research fields of urban political ecology, agri-food studies and geographical development and transformation research.

Conceptual focus of our work

As social scientists, we see our task in the development of novel heuristic concepts and their application in theory-based empirical research. Our approach is case-specific, which makes us a multi-paradigmatic team. Our current conceptual focus is on theories of social practices as well as on concepts of actor-network theory and new materialism. In the course of the “New Cultural Geography 2025” congress, we are exploring the possibilities of so-called “speculative geographies”.

Methodological focus

As geographers, we conduct both basic and applied research. In our empirical work, we are committed to the paradigm of interpretative social sciences. We work primarily with the help of qualitative methods (e.g. guided interviews, participant observation, text analysis, participatory methods), which are often supplemented by quantitative methods (e.g. standardized surveys, mapping, GIS analyses). In view of the increasingly urgent challenges posed by climate change, we follow the maxims of post-normal, transformative science.

Regional focus of our work.

In addition to Germany (particularly Bavaria), our regional focus is currently on India, Mexico and Uganda.
