Research - Molecular Cell Biology

Research Focus Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Diseases

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small, membrane-enclosed particles released by cells into their environments. They play a crucial role in intercellular communication by transporting a variety of bioactive molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. EVs are implicated in numerous biological processes. Our research is centered on EVs derived from various metabolic organs, such as adipose tissue and the pancreas. We aim to understand their role in organ communication under both normal and metabolically altered conditions. Additionally, we are investigating the potential of EVs as diagnostic biomarkers and exploring their use as therapeutic agents.

Research Focus Diabetic Nephropathy

Diabetic nephropathy is a severe kidney disorder that arises as a complication of diabetes and is a leading cause of kidney failure, significantly contributing to morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. By employing innovative models and advanced sequencing technologies, we are uncovering novel mechanisms driving the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Our research aims to leverage these insights to identify new therapeutic targets for effective treatment.

Research Focus Obesity and Diabetes Therapies

In cases of severe obesity, surgical procedures like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy are often the only effective options for long-term weight loss. However, novel incretin mimetics offer a promising therapeutic alternative. These drugs utilize the body’s natural signaling pathways to regulate blood sugar levels and support weight reduction. Our research is focused on analyzing the complex molecular mechanisms that drive both the efficacy and potential side effects of incretin mimetics.

Research Focus Impact of Environmental Factors on Metabolic Diseases

High temperatures and heat waves pose a significant risk for individuals with obesity and diabetes. Studies have shown that diabetics with nerve damage may experience impaired sweat gland function, increasing the risk of overheating.

In various model systems, we explore the molecular biological processes by which temperature changes affect metabolic processes in both healthy and metabolically diseased states. Our research is crucial for developing new approaches to prevent and treat heat-related health issues in diabetics and to improve their quality of life.

Doctorate successfully completed

Congratulations! Dr. rer. nat. Konxhe Kulaj has successfully defended her doctoral thesis "Adipocyte-derived Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Disease: Regulators of Insulin Secretion with Diagnostic Potential". Her research demonstrated that extracellular vesicles can enhance insulin secretion by delivering specific proteins to pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, her findings emphasize the promising role of these vesicles as diagnostic tools for metabolic diseases.

Invitation for a plenary talk at the MOVE international EV conference

Fantastic news! Our dedicated PhD student, Konxhe Kulaj, has been selected by the MOVE (MObility for Vesicles research in Europe) Consortium to give a plenary talk at their annual conference in Malaga. This presents a great opportunity for her to discuss her research with international experts in the field of extracellular vesicles.

Doctoral examination successfully passed

Hats off to Dr. rer. nat. Michaela Bauer for the successful defense of her doctoral thesis "The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Diseases." Her research centered on the characterisation of extracellular vesicles from adipocytes, studying their changes in obesity, and understanding their impact on metabolically active cells, especially pancreatic islet cells.

Jan. 18, 2023

New publication on the impact of adipocyte-derived EVs on insulin secretion released

In our recent article in Nature Communications we could demonstrate that extracellular vesicles from adipocytes influence insulin secretion. By transferring a specific cargo of proteins to pancreatic beta cells, vesicles from obese adipose tissue can enhance the secretion of insulin, contributing to the normalization of blood glucose levels.
